January 2026 marks the 54th anniversary of NBC’s hit sitcom, Sanford and Son. Developed by Bud Yorkin as an American remake of British comedy Steptoe and Son, it centers on the every day lives of father and son business owners Fred and Lamont Sanford as they run a junkyard, Sanford and Son Salvage, in Watts, CA. A ratings hit for most of its run, Sanford and Son has stood the test of time as one of the funniest Black sitcoms that began in the 1970s, especially when considering the surge of Black led talent during the 70s, such as The Jeffersons or Good Times.
More than that, several phrases from the show are part of the American pop culture lexicon, none more popular than Fred’s recurring exclamation to his only child: You big dummy!
